Labor Day
September 3, 2012
Labor Day is usually the day that marks the end of the summer. Its the last weekend that people usually use their vacation homes, pack up their boats and have massive parties. Really... Labor Day exists for a much better reason. Labor Day was established as a National Holiday in 1894 to pay tribute to the working men and women in the Nation.
I found this great quote by Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor while looking up the actual date it became a national holiday and wanted to share... "Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
As I have become more aware of myself, my body, my thought and really taken control over things in my life I have really started to think about the world, people in it, why we do the things we do, where "traditions" come from and honestly take the time to think about real things. I have always had a habit of acting fast and thinking last. I still am determined to be 100% honest with myself and my feeling and 100% honest with everyone in my life. Again... sometimes thats a blessing and sometimes thats a curse.
I was really really really looking forward to todays WOD. "DT" is probubly one of my favorite Hero WODs and certainly close to one of my all time favorites in general. Its amazing how fast things have changed for me and my mentality at crossfit. I knew going into today I was going to hit it hard, push through and really prove to myself that I could do it. It was 9:00 so we had a little time to get ready to head to the gym and a little added sleep which was nice as well.
When I arrived, I warmed up and so was excited to see all the "new" faces there with us! Sometimes holidays can be a little sparse in the gym but not today! Newbies and vets we were lining up and getting ready to face the beast!! M had some exellent tips for us all before we started and I had it all stored in my head. I trust everything he says so thats the method I was going to take. To my own surprise (I tend to do that) I completed the whole first round unbroken! I was pretty excited. The second round I started with M's method. I did 11 deadlifts and than did the 12th held it and went right into 8 cleans. I than dropped it, deadlifted than hang cleaned the weight up and continued into the 6 jerks.
I did have to break up the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds a bit more but just kept my head down and plowed ahead. When I completed the last jerk in the last round and looked up at the clock I was so proud of myself! I was exhausted, however I kept my head in the game and continued to push my fellow CFWers for the rest of their WOD.
It was one of those days I have that amazing feeling of accomplishment... god that feeling never gets old!
