Would You Go?
April 3, 2012
Ahhh, Springtime. The time for rain, the time for sunshine, blossoms, bon fires, cooking on the grill, bees... and of course sniffles, sneezes, coughs and lots and lots of tissues. You first contemplate (like I was all weekend) if what you are coming down with is an actual "cold" or... maybe it could just be allergies! Hoping for the best, you convince yourself its just that and you will be fine.
I woke up this morning after barely sleeping, tossing and turning... and (insert horror music here) I was sick. The throat was burning, the nose was running and I was still exhausted, despite going to bed at 8:30 last night. So, what do to... what to do... well.. get your ass out of bed and go to crossfit!! What else would I do!!
I have to admit, the best I felt ALL DAY was at the gym. Yeah, you feel like hell when you wake up, you have been laying on your back all night and your tired. I mean, there are times I dont want to get out of bed on a "normal" day, so why would I think I would feel like bouncing out of bed if I was sick. Once I get moving I am ok. I of course didnt want to take anything for my cold before heading to the gym, since I didnt want to dry out even faster. I was armed with some daytime cold meds for after my shower!
So the WOD went pretty well, considering! There was a great group of 5:30ers and we all endured the wrath of "Tag" together. It was 20 minutes of quite a bit of cardio... and a few pushups! I feel like I held up pretty well considering my throat was on fire and I wouldnt let myself stop. Honestly, the way I look at it is this... so what if I am a little slower or a little weaker because I have a cold, I am going to go put my best foot forward and change as little as possible while I am fighting this.
Just because I couldnt get it out of my head I did some research about exercising while sick. Yes, I understand there are different kinds of sicknesses. I of course would not be at the gym infecting everyone of some horrible virus if I was sick to my stomach or sick with something else really bad. I also wouldnt put myself in danger if I was feverish or dizzy... I knew what I was fighting was a good old fashioned cold and hey if I was going to go to work I was going to go to the gym! I kept my germies to myself!
The research I found showed that unless you are suffering from an illness that affects your chest (like a chest cold or pneumonia) or you have a fever or of course a stomach bug... there is no affect on your lung capacity and you should be able to perform and continue training. They took 60 people and infected 30 people with a cold bug... than they had them all do the same exercises. Low and behold they all performed the same. Not to mention those who have regular exercise regimens seem to recover faster from the cold than others (the article is HERE if you want to read the whole thing). So there you have it... I am not crazy!!
I am fighting away and am hoping todays the worst of it. No one wants to be told "you look like crap" at work... and thats what I look and feel like.
Tomorrow is another day...
