"DT" Challenge
September 6, 2011
I was going to title this post "Death by DT" since really, I know I have said it before... but, this was the hardest and most challenging workout I have done in my 4 weeks at CFW. I will tell you about the workout in a second, but K and I were talking about what "DT" stands for at the end of the workout. She discovered (thank you smart phone) that the initials DT represent Timothy Davis. When I got to writing this post, I wanted to see who DT was and what the origin of todays WOD was.
This is where I started to find that my previous title would be inappropriate. These initials are the ops initials of SSgt Tim Davis, 23d Special Tactics Squadron, US Air Force who was killed in action on February 20, 2009. He was 28 years old supporting operations in OEF when his vehicle was struck by and IED. He was a husband and a father to a one year old son at the time of the accident. You can read more about Tim Daivs HERE. Clearly the person who wrote this had a personal relationship with him. My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones, friends, brothers, sisters, children, parents through their lives.
Ok so enough of that... except I will say, Tim Davis must have been one hell of a man to have this workout named for him!! Oh my god. When I arrived on this cool wet morning T was there warming up. I talked to him yesterday to see if he wanted to get there at the same time this morning so we could feel the "challenge" you get when working out with someone else. So, 5:30am I pulled into the parking lot. I am still sore, my calves kill. My shoulders were tight, my abs are feeling it... those thrusters did good things yesterday!!
K loaded up the bar while I was doing my warmup. I attempted one hanging power clean, which is like a clean, but rather than starting at the deadlift position you are already at your knees with the weight. Yeah, the 95lb attempt was a fail, as was the 90lb. Well thats not entirely true, I got the 90lb one up for one rep. Um, I have to do 5 sets with 9 of these in each set... lets go with the 85lbs!! The object of the DT is to complete all the exercises with the same weight, so with 85lbs the deadlifts and push jerks would be pretty light... so I thought...
We started and man oh man... the deadlifts were "easy" but I am sore from this weekend, 12 still did a number on my legs. Than it was time to get into those HPC's... the first round I did as set of 6 than a set of 3 (to get my nine total). Hardest movement yet. You really dont think about how much momentum you get from the deadlift. Push Jerks followed, and to be honest that was the easiest part! (Sorry P and T if I woke you up dropping the weights)!
I reduced the weight and did the second set with 75lbs. T and I were pretty much at the same pace. I was catching my breath at the end of the second set... he drops his weight and I looked at K and said "two" and followed it with a meek "are you sure there are 5 sets not 3 sets" she said "nope pretty sure there are 5 sets... keep it up." T and I both went back to work and pushed out the last sets...
The third was hard, as was the 4th... K was agian fantastic as getting us in there to pick up the weights as soon as we put them down. She encouraged us not to give up, keep pushing and drive the hips forward to get the HPC's in. The best words were finally spoken "last round" and I couldnt wait to get it done. Pushed out all the deadlifts, did the cleans in a set of 6 and a set of 3, all the push jerks without stopping and DONE.
Oh.My.God. My shoulders feel like my arms could literally drop out of the sockets. Forget about the calf pain... hahah thats old news! I kept sort of getting a light headed feeling through the sets, but I know it was my mind wanting me to stop, I needed to get out of that comfort zone. It was really hot since we had to keep on garage door closed and I was working really hard. There was no need to stop, a few breaths than back in... was running through my mind. I didnt stop, and I didnt give up, and I did it.
Callouses are developing more and more... so the pain in my hands is getting less and less as the weeks go by. I did get two nice cuts on my thumbs this morning from cleaning, I will have to work on those spots! I am sure within a few hours I am going to tighten up again. I wonder what is to come tomorrow morning!! I am going in for more!! Love it!
