Dedication

August 14, 2012

There are plenty of people who voice their opinion on how "obsessed" crossfit athletes are. I have hear it personally and I know I have talked to others that are in the same boat. "We" all know that we are not "obsessed," that we are actually just dedicated to a lifestyle in which we take care of our bodies in not only exercise and food but in the mind as well. I am sure to the naked eye, I have to look like a crazy mess... but I think deep down inside some people just cant understand how some crossfitters can be so dedicated to this life and they wonder why they "cant" seem to find the gusto to do it themselves.

I think there is a line. A solid line between being completly OBSESSED with something and being dedicated 100% to achieving a goal. This isnt a "fine line" its a pretty solid thick line that if you understand what CrossFit does and how it works, you can clearly see the difference. Goals in CrossFit are never ending. The second you reach a goal you set another. There are short term and long term goals and hell, there are some goals that get blown out of the water so fast you dont even have time to think about it. Sure, like most, I started CrossFit as a way to lose weight and get in shape... but I quickly realized that that was only part of my goals. I had no idea the doors that would open for me and the fantastic things that happen within the CrossFit community.

Yes, when you get two or more people who CrossFit in a room together, more often than not the conversation will eventually become about CrossFit or food... but thats not because we are obsessed, it is because we understand each other... its something we have in common and I will be the first to admit, its fun to talk about struggles, workouts, accomplishments, goals and of course the future. I love to hear what happens with someones workout, how they handled something challenging or fun, if they are doing any competitions... and we are always up for learning about new Paleo meals and treats. This is probably super annoying to someone who dosent CrossFit, but think of it this way; I dont know everything about some sports teams, I suck at golf... I dont know NASCAR... there are plenty of sports and other "things" that people talk about because they share the same interest... thats CrossFit for me. When I find someone is interested I cant help but tell them how it changed my life. When someone I know does it... I want to know how much they like it and what they are doing... and yes, like any other sport, we have "big name athletes" that we know all the stats on and follow regularly.

I take pride in the fact that I dont miss workouts. I take pride in the fact that I can pass up drinking beers on a Friday night... it takes a lot of will power in our society to make some of these changes. There are struggles, but I have goals in mind and all the motivation I need to get there. One of the most common things I hear is the phrase, "I could never..." and its either followed by "give up XYZ food" or "get up that early and workout" or even "do that workout." You know what... your right. If you think you cant. You never will.

Commitment to a healthy long life... obsession or dedication? You choose.
