Shouldnt it be Easy?
August 9, 2012
Why do we look so hard for happiness? Shouldn’t it just be “easy”
shouldn’t it just come “sit on your shoulder?”
We only know what goes on in our own heads, in our own
lives. Even if you have a best friend, someone you share everything with, you
still don’t know exactly what that person is feeling. What makes them happy and
how they stay that way, and I guess… if they are really as happy as they appear.
We all know that everyone gets excited about different things, and different
people have different things that make them “tick” or their heart “pitter
patter” on a daily basis. So, really… the question is… is there actually a real
definition of “happiness?” How do we know what happiness supposed to be like?
Its only what you think… its only in your own mind. You define your own
happiness. Someone else might be
perfectly happy with a life that you are unhappy with. But, how do you know if
you are as happy as you can be?
I guess you cant.
So do we just live in the moment? Do we just be as happy as
we can be for the time being, just to deal with the punches as they come? Where
do we draw the line?
Sometimes life loses its “umph.” The idea is to keep that “umph”
going, to keep your mind open, your options open and to make sure that you are
in fact HAPPY. No, it wont be all rainbows and butterflies all the time but you
should be more “happy” than not. YOU are the only person in control of that. If
you are in a relationship, the other person can only provide you with the happiness
that you accept from them. If you don’t want to be happy, no matter how many times
that person buys you flowers, strokes your ego (get your mind out of the gutter
I said ego) or asks you if you are happy… if these things don’t make you happy,
than you wont be. If you like your job, you may have stressfull days and days
that you want to pull your hair out, but overall, you have to ask yourself… are
you satisfied and happy with what you are doing? To many people do things that
are habit, or comfortable and forget about themselves. I have seen it with my
own eyes. Why settle? Why settle in your relationship, friendship, family,
school, job, LIFE?
Than I sit and think… is it possible to think too much? Shouldn’t
happiness just be “easy?” If you have to think “am I happy” than are you?
Overall in my life I have sort of a cardinal rule. Honesty.
Sometimes my “lack of filter” gets me in trouble… but for the most part, it
makes me a happier person. I am not only open with other people, but I am open
with myself. I try to think things through, I try to be honest to myself about
my feelings. Its important to not convince yourself that you like something, want
something or agree with something just to make someone else happy. If there is
something missing, lacking or not working… there is no harm in asking whoever
it may involve if that can be changed or fixed. Sometimes it hurts to do such a
thing, but in the long run if it makes you/them happier than why not.
I consider myself to be pretty lucky. I made the choice to
be committed 100% to CrossFit, no one has to understand that but me. It makes
me happy to go there, be there and talk about it. I have a great job that I am
comfortable talking to my colleagues and seniors about my performance and the
company in order to continue to be happy. I have family, friends and a husband
who I am 100% honest with 100% of the time about my feelings. Sometimes, as I
said above… the truth hurts, either them or myself… or both of us… but what it
comes down to, is our relationships are strengthened by honesty and the fact
that I surround myself with people I can be honest with, that makes me happy.
All in all, I have to learn to “turn my head” and let life
unfold. Happiness is a wild ride. In the words of my mother (that I now I have permanently
on my skin) “que sera sera.” If we knew what was coming… would we still make the
same choices?
